1. Your Consultant Broker needs to have a good relationship with the customer

The way to get your dream job is to always ask your broker what kind of relationship she has with the customer and company. You should only do business with brokers who knows and have met the customer, also who has a good relationship with the customers. We at Tech Relations only work with customers we know, and have met, always working directly without any middle hands.

2. You have to have a good relationship with your Broker

Brokers meets a lot of freelancers & consultants everyday and you need to end up top of mind and have a relationship with your Broker. Ask for a lunch or a short meeting! Send your CV and call us. The Broker needs to know you and what you are good at. Also there must be trust for us to be able to appoint to you our customers. We never do business with only a CV and email- conversations.

3. Always adapt your CV for each specific assignment

Please work with your CV.  Let someone you know, read it and come with feedback. Perhaps you should also have different CV:s for different roles or industries if you have worked with different roles (eg one for fullstack, one with more focus on frontend)  so that you can quickly send the broker the right one. As we appoints consultant in 3 days you can understand how fast we act, and therefore you also need to be fast, and relevant. You also have to read the full assignment and lift up only relevant experience because the customer rarly read the whole CV. No one has time for that anymore.

4. Create an interesting and different CV

Also, the way to get your dream job is to always think that the customer only will read the first page of your CV. Is it giving them a summery of who you are, for this specific assignment? Its a good idea to let a designer take a look at your CV layout as well, as no one remembers a standard CV with boring font. Always include your portfolio and Linkedin profile, or/and Github.

5. You need to have a hourly rate within the customers price range (Ask your consultant broker)

The hourly rate is more important than you think and you need to find out what price range the customer has for this specific assignment. This is something the broker knows. There can also be history behind the price, for example the customer needs to replace an existing more junior developer, and you might be more senior, but the budget for the customer is the same. Therefore the price might be lower than you are used to. Find out!

6. Your Consultant Broker need to have a framework agreement or a direct dialog with the customer

You also need to keep track of which framework agreements apply to this customer. For example, the top 50 largest Companies in Sweden usually have framework agreements with 3-4 consultancy companies and 1 consultant broker. This means, if you are not one of them, you cannot sell to them. Doesn’t matter how much you want. So ask your broker if they have a frame agreement and if they sell directly to the head of development manager, or if they have to go through the purchasing department.

7. Always ask about how the process looks like and about your competitors

You should always ask your broker how the interview process looks like at this customer. Some of our customers only meets our consultants once, and other have 4 meetings and technical tests before they decided. You should also ask your broker about their cut and if they will send in more CVs and their price range.

Best of luck!
